Planning a trip on a budget can be a challenging task for lots of sightseers — particularly if you’re traveling to a new and exotic destination. Wondering where to go, what to do, and where to stay can be a challenging (especially when keeping budget in mind).
If you’re looking for some fun in the sun without breaking the bank, you may be surprised to learn that Jamaica is a budget-friendly travel destination.
So, how much does a trip to this Caribbean gem cost?
Surprisingly, Jamaica is the perfect vacation destination for travelers seeking adventure on a budget. At an average cost of just $103.00 per day (including stay, food and activities), Jamaica is a small island with big personality that offers a wide variety of adventures, scenic excursions, and relaxing activities to satisfy just about everybody.
If you are looking for a tropical destination that ticks all the boxes (without the sticker shock!) Jamaica is the place for you. And if you’re traveling from the US, you’ll even love the airline prices.
All-inclusive resorts are worth the price
Just because Jamaica is more affordable than some other Caribbean destinations doesn’t mean that it’s lacking in luxury. Jamaica is a hub of all-inclusive resorts that are easier on the pocketbook than one might imagine.
If the terms “all-inclusive” and “resort” are already making you see dollar signs, don’t fret! The benefits of all-inclusive packages often far outweigh any disadvantages, and these resorts are typically organized with all of the details in mind for travelers to have an incredible stay.
Having been to Jamaica several times, I can report that resorts are welcoming, comfortable, and set in incredible scenic surrounds. All-inclusive offerings enable visitors to take full advantage of Jamaica’s prime waterfront vistas without much (or any) local transportation, as many are located right on prime beach territory.
I stayed at Bahia Principe Grand Jamaica, which costs an average of $124 per day. This modest price included all food, drinks, transportation to and from the hotel, and entertainment (such as the in-resort night club).
Once you arrive, leave your wallet in the hotel room and throw on the colorfully stylish bracelet that provides access to every all-inclusive amenity that the resort had to offer.
There are similar all-inclusive resorts up and down the coast of Jamaica, each with their own benefits. Here are some that we suggest if you’re looking for a stay focused on fun, rest and relaxation without all of the in-depth planning:
Grand Palladium Jamaica Resort & Spa | $170 |
Jewel Runaway Beach Resort | $75 |
Jewel Grande Montego Bay Resort | $282 |
Hostels are a great way to stay year-round
If the resorts aren’t your scene, or you’re looking to splurge on adventures more than accommodation, Jamaica offers great hostels where you can rest your weary head after a day of backpacking and taking in the scenery.
The Ragamuffin Hostel & Coffee Bar near the Bob Marley Museum in Kingston is sublime for good vibes and making connections with people from all over the world that are exploring the island.
Other popular hostel destinations include:
Prices for these hostels can change depending on the season, and all three are excellent jumping-off points for a day of adventure.
Bang for your buck
If you’re from the United States, the cost of going to Jamaica is further enhanced by the fact that the US dollar goes further there. You’ll get more bang for your buck with nearly all flight and accommodation arrangements, activities, and food and drink purchases.
Though prices can vary in more touristy areas like Negril and Ocho Rios, the average cost of meals per day in Jamaica is J$3,051 per person, which is just about $20 USD. And if you’re curious about drinks, a Red Stripe, Jamaica’s famous locally-brewed beer, will set up back around $1.75 on average).
(Pro-tip: seeing prices listed in USD versus Jamaican dollars (J$) is a sign that you’re in a more expensive area of the island).
With a wide variety of incredible dining destinations to choose from, spanning must-try street food to beach-side sit-down restaurants, you can’t go wrong with the fresh and vibrant flavors that Jamaica has to offer.
Jamaican Excursions & Beyond
Whether you’re a pleasure or thrill seeker, there’s plenty of fun to be had in Jamaica. The island boasts a plethora of outdoor activities and incredible experiences, all of which are known to leave tourists in awe of the island’s natural beauty.
Excursions are usually not included in the all-inclusive vacation packages, so be sure to book and schedule these in advance to reserve your spot.
Notable outdoor activities include:
- Rafting
- Scuba diving and snorkeling
- Boating and catamarans
- Cave exploration
- Backpacking
- Tours of waterfalls and natural wonders
If laying back and just enjoying a relaxing getaway is more your thing, you can experience local culture by taking part in tours offered by friendly guides around the island. There’s plenty of local shopping and exploring to be had around the island, and a knowledgable guide is sure to lead you to amazing hidden gems that might be off the typical tourist route.
